Verse 48 is concerned with the category dravya (substance); 37 in agreement with Vaiśeṣika doctrine, the substances are nine in number: the five mahābhūtas, 38 ātman, manas, time (kāla) and space (diś); this enumeration of what are called the kāraṇadravyas is followed by an ardhaśloka on the kāryadravyas, divided into sentient (cetana) and insentient (acetana). 39
