v1.c8.88

The diseases of the head (śiroroga) are discussed first because the head is the chief part (uttamāṅga) of the body, being the place where the vital breaths (prāṇāḥ) and the senses are located (17.12). A long series of disorders affecting the head is enumerated (17.13–14). 216 The śirorogas in a restricted sense are five in number; they are caused by vāta, pitta, kapha, all the three doṣas together, and parasites (krimi) (17.15–29). 217 The same five types of heart disease (hṛdroga) are described (17.30–40). 218
