Nāganātha was the eldest son of Kṛṣṇabhaṭṭa,⁵⁴⁰ -paṇḍita, or -sūri and a descendant of a family of physicians. He was probably the elder brother and teacher of Nārāyaṇa, who wrote the Jvaranirṇaya and a commentary on Śārṅgadhara’s Triśatī,⁵⁴¹ and also one of the teachers of Lakṣmaṇa, the author of the Yogacandrikā.⁵⁴² Since the Triśatī belongs to the fifteenth century, Nārāyaṇa and his brother Nāganātha cannot be earlier and may belong to the sixteenth century. The earliest MS of the Nidānapradīpa dates from 1684/85.⁵⁴³ P.V. Sharma⁵⁴⁴ suggested that Nāganātha may have been the great-grandfather of Koṇerībhaṭṭa, the father of Rudrabhaṭṭa, the author of commentaries on the Śārṅgadharasamhitā and Lolimbarāja’s Vaidyajīvana, but this would conflict with the date of Rudrabhaṭṭa, wo lived about A.D. 1600.
