Chapter sixteen is about sāraṇa, a process which renders the product obtained by means of the preceding processes capable of pervading base metals and added and thus transmuting them. Sāraṇa is achieved by means of sāraṇataila. The preparation of this oil is described, along with the instrument used, the sāraṇayantra (11–23).¹⁶⁶ Sāraṇa can also be carried out by means of the ḍamarukayantra (24–25). Pratisāraṇa and anusāraṇa are defined (30);¹⁶⁷ these varieties of sāraṇa increase the transmuting power (31–35).
