The name of the author is Bhūdeva Devaśarman Mukhopādhyāya. He was a brāhmaṇa of Bhāradvājagotra, a son of Harilāla and Nistāriṇī, and was born in Bengal, in a village called Hastiśāla on the banks of the river Mayūrākṣī, in the year 1885. The author mentions Śrīharṣa, who composed the Naiṣadhacarita, as one of his forefathers.³⁸
