Another easterly centre of learning was the court of King Janaka of *Videha*. Janaka himself was the centre of a distinguished literary circle. Many learned scholars of the day revolved round him like satellites, among whom are mentioned Yājñavalkya, Śvetaketu, Jītvan Śailini, Udaṅka Śaulbāyana, Barku Vārshṇa, Gardabhīvibhīta Bhāradvāja, Satyakāma Jābāla, and Vidagdha Śākalya. The learned men of the *Kuru-Pañchāla* country were also associated with the court of Janaka through the tournaments of debate accompanying his horse-sacrifice, and we have the names of their representatives who took part in that debate, viz. Aśvala, Jāratkārava Ārtabhāga, Bhujyu Lāhyāyani, Ushasta Chākrāyaṇa, Kahoḍa Kaushītakeya, Gārgī Vāchaknavī.
