**Education under ‘Upādhyāya’.** We have, however, other types of educational institutions indicated by the evidence of the period. We have already referred to the schools conducted by teachers technically called *Upādhyāyas* who would admit to their instruction on payment of fees temporary pupils who sought lessons in particular subjects. Generally speaking, the Upādhāyas provided supplementary instruction and were proficient only in the Vedic Aṅgas or a part of the Veda.
