**Time of these Developments.** That these processes accomplished themselves before the time of the grammarian Patañjali is shown from some of his allusions. He mentions Dharma-sūtras and also refers to the formation of the special word "*Dhārmavidyā*" which denotes "a person who studies or knows the *dharma-vidyā*, the science of the sacred law". The word *Dharma-śāstra* which also occasionally occurs in his *Bhāshya* may perhaps point to the Manuals composed and studied in the special Schools, which were distinct from the Dharma-sūtras.
