¹ The growth of such a varied profane literature as is indicated by these casual references inclines one to doubt the correctness of the supposition that such ancient religious texts as the Atharvaveda, the Āraṇyakas, the Upanishads, the Vājasaneyi Saṁhitā, or the Śatapatha Brāhmaṇa were unknown to Pāṇini. The matter requires to be carefully considered by more competent scholars.
