¹ There was indeed a considerable growth of Vārttika literature, of which we may distinguish three distinct and different strata: (1) The *Kārikās* or Sloka-vārttikas, (2) *Traditional* Vārttikas which end in the expression "it is remembered", and (3) *Opposition*-Vārttikas which dictate a rule in the style of the Sūtras.
