**Rules of Education.** We shall now consider the evidence regarding the conditions and regulations of education. The ceremony of initiation is referred to as Āchārya-karaṇa [i, 3, 36] and *Upanayana*. The sense of the latter term, according to Pāṇini, is that the teacher, by bringing, according to religious rules, the pupil unto himself, brings himself up as a teacher through instruction, whence the expression, *Māṇavakaṁ Upanayate*. The *Bālamanoramā* cites an interesting verse defining an Āchārya as one who, receiving unto himself (*upanīya*) a pupil, teaches him the Veda together with the Kalpas and Rahasyas.
