The *Kauṭilīya* gives some new information regarding the preliminary training to be given to a child before he is old enough to be admitted to formal studentship. After the ceremony of tonsure was over, the child was to be taught Writing (*lipi*) and Numbers (i.e. arithmetic, *saṁkhyā*).
