**Views of Śaṅkara.** Saṅkara begins by defining the subject-matter of Vedānta. It is *Brahma-jijñāsā*, "an inquiry into Brahman," and not *Dharma-jijñāsā*, "the inquiry into Dharma," which is the subject of *Pūrva-Mīmāṁsā*.
