This method of interrogation, cross-examination, debate, and discussion among fellow-seekers of Truth (whom the Rigveda describes as *Sakhās* meeting for the purpose in *Saṁghas*) was later elaborated into a Science, and exalted into an Art, to teach the principles and practices of debate or argument as a means of knowledge or education. It reached its culmination in the age of the Philosophical Systems, and in one of the Systems, *Nyāya* or Logic. It will, therefore. be useful to bring together some of the typical texts and data showing how Debate was practised as a Fine Art in the sphere of learning and education.¹
