**Pūrva-Mīmāṁsā and its System of Discipline.** The subject of *Pūrva-Mīmāṁsā* is the *Karma-Kāṇḍa* or *Dharma* of Veda, as that of *Uttara-Mīmāṁsā* is *Jñāna-Kāṇḍa* or *Brahma*. The *Uttara-Mīmāṁsā* seeks to evolve a system out of the Upanishads. The *Purva-Mīmāṁsā* seeks to reconcile the divergent ceremonials and customs as preserved in the *Brāhmaṇas* by evolving a general and rational scheme, a philosophy of ritualism showing the place and justification for each particular rite by the method of *mīmāṁsā*, "investigation, examination, consideration."
