**Pramāṇa.** The first topic is *Pramāṇa* or means of knowledge which are described as fourfold, viz. (1) *Pratyaksha*, sensuous perception, (2) *Anumāna*, inference, (3) *Upamāna*, comparison, and (4) *Śabda* or the Word, particularly that of the Veda. This shows that *Nyāya*, far from repudiating the Veda, acknowledges it as a source of knowledge itself.
