**Guṇamati Vihāra.** Another famous monastery in the neighbourhood was one on the slope of a mountain with its high bases backed by the ridge and chambers hewn out of the cliff, which "was built in honour of Guṇamati Bodhisattva who here vanquished in discussion the great Sāṁkhya doctor, Mādhava " (p. 108). This Guṇamati, associated with Sthiramati and distinguished with him at Nālanda for the elegance of composition, was from Valabhī in Western India (p. 109).
