Nadia is the popular name of Navadvīpa on the Bhāgīrathī at its confluence with Jalāṅgī. Once it was a centre of trade borne by the Bhāgīrathī between Saptagrāma (on the river Sarasvatī near Hoogly) and the United Provinces, and in the other direction by the Jalāṅgī between Saptagrāma and Eastern Bengal.
