Kashmir, in fact, in those days was the stronghold of Buddhist Learning and Religion and supplied China with many erudite Indian scholars to work for the cause of Chinese Buddhism. Among these may be mentioned the following, viz. (1) Buddhayasas, (2) Dharmayasas, (3) Dharmakshema, (4) Buddhajīva, (5) Dharmamitra. Of these, the most renowned was Dharmakshema, who was a native of "Central India", and translated into Chinese many important works between A.D. 414–421, including the *Buddhacharita* of Aśvaghosa, the *Bodhisattva Prātimoksha*, *Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra*, and the like. His life was unfortunately cut short by an assassin as the result of two Chinese local kings contending for his services!
