King Triśaṅku, a descendant of the race of Ikṣāku, desired to celebrate a sacrifice in order that he might ascend bodily to heaven. Vasiṣṭha declared it to be impossible but Visvāmitra by his austerities accomplished his object against the wish of the Vāsiṣṭhas and the gods.
