Perhaps contemporary by Śrīpati was the mathematician Jayadeva.³¹ Though none of his works are now extant, a quotation in the Sundari composed by Udayadivākara in 1073 proves that he knew the cyclic solution (cakravāla) of Pell's equation—that is, of indeterminate equations of the second degree (vargaprakṛti) for which Brahmagupta possessed a partial solution. Jayadeva's solution was independently discovered in the West in the seventeenth century.
