Except for commentaries, no significant traditional Sanskrit works on mathematics were written after the sixteenth century. At Jayasiṃha’s court at Jayapura, however, in the 1720’s and 1730’s, an effort was made to translate Arabic and Persian versions of Greek mathematical treatises into Sanskrit. The two leading translators were Nayanasukhopādhyāya⁵⁹ and Jagannātha; the former translated, at the dictation of Muḥammad Ābida, the Σφαιρικά of Theodosius under the title Ukāra (Arabic Ukarr) or Kaṭara (Arabic quṭr), the latter Euclid’s Στοιχεῖα under the title Rekhāgaṇita.⁶⁰
