Vasantarāja composed his *Śakunārṇava*⁶⁰ at or near Vārāṇasī in the 1090's since he dedicated it to the Gāhaḍavāla Candradeva (ca. 1089–1103). In a verse toward the beginning (1, 27) he names as his predecessors Atri, Garga, Guru (Bṛhaspati), Śukra (Bhṛgu), Vasiṣṭha, Vyāsa, Kautsa (perhaps Aṅgiras⁶¹), Bhṛgu, and Gautama.⁶² Its twenty *vargas* give omens from the cries and movements of birds and animals. A *ṭīkā* was written by Bhānucandra Gaṇi⁶³ of the Tāpāgaccha in about 1559 in the empire of Akbar (1556–1605); it was edited by Bhānucandra's pupil, Siddhicandra.
