With Mahāsena, King of Ujjain and father of Vāsavadattā, was an architect named Pukkasaka who once went out to Saurāṣhtra along with the King's camp. There he came across a young architect, Viśvila by name, who was verily the equal of Viśvakarman. To Viśvila's father, called Maya, Pukkasaka proposed that he desired to give his daughter Ratnāvalī in marriage to his son. The proposal was agreed to and Pukkasaka was waiting for the arrival of his son-in-law. Once, after attending to his work, Pukkasaka returned rather late and to his surprise found none in his house eager to attend to his bath and his dinner.
