On this positive side of ancient Indian culture, topics pertaining to major sciences like medicine or mathematics have always formed the recognised subjects for research or disquisition. I have picked up an out-of-the-way subject from what may be referred to as one of the byways in this department of investigation. The enormous scientific advancement today and our familiarity with marvels of mechanical invention and perfection may reduce the value of this study; but it must be granted by the moderns that it is the dreams of ages and the crude experiments of old that have been the forerunners of the recent advances.⁴
