ASOKA died in 232 B.C. and was followed by a number of weak successors. After the Mauryans, the Sungas ruled India. The Sunga Dynasty was founded by Pushyamitra, the Commander-in-Chief of the last Maurya ruler Brihadratha. He moved the capital from Pataliputra to Malwa. Kalinga became independent under Kharavela who invaded Magadha and captured Pataliputra. The Andhras (the Śātavāhanas) occupied the north of the peninsula. The southern half of the peninsula was ruled by the Cholas, Pandyas and Cheras. Northern India was ruled by the Indo-Greek kings.
