v1.c34.7
The most important development of this period is the spread of irrigated rice cultivation. Most probably it diffused from the adjoining area of Orissa to the coastal area of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu in the Iron Age, about 300 B.C. It meant a secure food supply and probably led to a population explosion. It is no accident that the early Tamil kingdoms were located in deltaic areas of rivers.
