¹ The author avails himself of this opportuntiy to express his indebtedness to Mr. Chandrabhúshana Bhádurí, B.A., Demonstrator, Chemical Dept., Presidency College, with whom he has, of late, had frequent discussions on the chemistry of the Japanese Process. It was Mr. Bhádurí who hit on the true explanation as given above. The experiments i, ii, iii and iv were all performed by him. As Mr. Bhádurí has expressed a desire to work out the subject in all its bearings, we can confidently look forward to some very interesting results.
