[^ *]: Intro. to "Sùryyasiddhánta". We find from Ptolemy that the observations of Hipparchus extended from B. C. 162 to B. C. 127. Ptolemy flourished at Alexandria in the second century A. D., under the reigns of Adrian and Marcus Aurelius. This was also pointed out long ago by Colebrooke, *e. g.* "The whole cluster of astronomers mentioned by Brahma Gupta must be placed in the interval between the age of Hipparchus, and possibly that of Ptolemy."—Essays, pp. 411—412. [^ †]: *Aryabhatta* composed his treatise "Laghváryabhattíyam," in 496 A. D., and Varáhamihira his "Pañchasiddhántiká" about 550 A. D. But these astronomers borrowed from the much older treatise entitled "Romakasiddhánta" ascribed to Srísena, and Paulisasiddhánta (*vide* Thibaut's Intro. to Pañchasiddhántiká, xxvii—xxxvi).
