The relation of the specific characters of molecules (and higher aggregates) to the original atomic qualities is reduced in the Nyáya-Vaiseshika to the following canons :— (a) कार्यगुणाः कारणगुणाः पूर्व्वकम् । (b) समानजातीयसंयोगः द्व्यारम्भकः न विजातीय-संयोगः (Here द्रव्य is used in a narrow technical sense, so as to exclude the quasi-compound substances). (c) अपाकजरूपरसगन्धस्पर्शपरिमाणकत्वैकपृथक्त्व-गुरुत्वद्रवत्वस्नेहवेगाः कारणगुणपूर्व्वकाः । (d) रूपरसगन्धानुष्णस्पर्शशब्द-परिमाणकत्वैकपृथक्त्वः समानजात्यारम्भकाः । No separate explanation is necessary, as the canons are embodied in the following exposition.
