In the Vrihat Samhita there is also some allusion to hair dyes, cosmetics, frankincense and scents. There is a chapter on perfumery where various recipes for artificial imitation of natural flower scents such as the essence of *vakula*, *utpala*, *champaka*, etc, are given, and compound scents are arranged in a sort of scale according to the proportions of certain basic scents used in combination for their preparation.
