We may disbelieve the supernatural event. But this much stands out clearly from the story that Śāntideva's genius was not recognised for a long time. The students took him to be a second "Jadabharata". It was, however, when they persisted in their attempt to fool Śāntideva, that the latter shone forth in all his brilliance, and showed them his metal, and in appreciation of his genius the Lord Himself came down to escort him to heaven.
