The same observance of the Rain-retreat and the assignment of rooms according to the ranks of the priests;⁵ the same Upasampāda ordination, though in a different way,⁶ the priests followed even at such a distance of time, as the 7th century A. D. when I-Tsing visited Nālandā. This shows that even though the place had outgrown itself, from a mere town, oft visited by Buddha with his small band, to a very enviable position in the eyes of the world as an international centre of learning, it still retained the old practices which the World-honoured had taught.¹ And these it found "beneficial", for in following the World-honoured it was known and honoured in the world.
