The MS. further tells us that he entered the Nālandā Mahāvihāra under a disguise. His sobriety and solemnity earned for him the name of Śāntideva. Perhaps this name was given to him in jest by other students, as it appears from the later account. At Nālandā, he studied the three Pitakas.
