Do the Purānic deities (Śiva, Viṣṇu, Pārvatī and Saraswatī) along with the representations of the Buddhist hierarchy, as Marshall remarks, bear an eloquent testimony of the general catholicity and eclecticism of the people towards religious faith in later Mediaeval times², or do they show a gradual transformation in the Buddhist faith itself, from pure ethical and agnostic atheism, to theism of the most democratic kind?
