Starting as early as the *Brāhmaṇas* and the *Upaniṣads*, we meet with several references to the famous teachers, to whom students flocked for knowledge from all quarters. Many of these teachers have been called "*Kulapatis*." The word "*Kulapati*" is interpreted to signify the head of a number of students, even as many as 10,000.² But this, as we said, is only an interpretation. There is no documentary evidence to show that there really existed a number as large as 10,000.
