The aim of the student, as we have seen in the preceding pages, was not, in the least, utilitarian. It was ideal or transcendental rather than practical. But it may be asked how many attained their ideal and in how many cases, the ideal was lost sight of and more and more attention was concentrated on the means and their immediate results e.g., success in philosophical and religious discussions, which really were meant to lead to true knowledge.
