The University sent four men of distinguished position some seven yojanas in advance to receive Hiuen Tsiang. Refreshing himself at the guest-house belonging to the University, Hiuen Tsiang entered Nālandā, with some two hundred priests and about a thousand lay patrons, recounting his praises, and carrying standards, umbrellas, flowers and perfumes.¹
