(1) Scholars are divided on this point. Raychaudhuri, o.c., p. 210 says that he was not so intolerant as some represent him to be, while Bagchi, *Decline of Buddhism in India and its Causes*, A.M.S.J., Vol., Orientalia, Part II, pp. 405-6, has tried to prove by citing *Divyāvadāna* and Kimura that Pusyamitra did really persecute the Buddhists.
