Kumārila in the eighth century and Śaṅkara in the ninth attacked and demolished the gigantic and at one time impregnable edifices of the Sarvāstivādins, Vijñānavādins and others. They showed and proved the hollowness and absurdity of the Buddhist dialectics, of the theory of momentariness, etc. And the strength and complete mastery of the Vedāntin attack will be evident from the fact that Śaṅkara¹ thinks it too low, even to speak of Śūnyavāda, let apart its criticism and refutation.
