Thus did the great University meet its end, is the verdict of the political historian, whose main function seems to have been to record only wars and treaties, death and devastation of men and countries, and the rise and fall of institutions and empires. But strangely enough, the question is asked, why could not the buildings be reconstructed as after the Hūna invasion under Mihirakula and after the interregnum which followed the death of Harṣa and the rise of Pālas in Bengal, admitted though it be that the Moslem came, saw and conquered, and left no traces of the physical existence of the University?
