This heritage we may divide into two parts—Buddhist and non-Buddhist. The non-Buddhist part, to give only a bare outline, would include *Vēdas*, *Vēdānta*, works on such philosophical systems, as the *Sāmkhya*, *Vaiśeṣika* and other branches of knowledge that will be enumerated hereafter. The Buddhist division would include the various teachings of Buddha contained in the Vinaya Pitaka, Dhammapada, Abhidhamma Pitaka, Majjihima Nikāya, Sutta Pitaka and others.
