³ Ibid. But it seems that Hiuen Tsiang does not refer to other kings but only sums up the work of construction of the earlier kings from Kumāragupta I to Harṣa. This interpretation would be at once apparent if we add ‘thus’ and read, “(Thus) a long succession of kings continued the work of building.. till the whole is truly marvellous to behold.”
