Kumāra Gaṇaka is the author of *Raṇadīpikā*,³ which he composed at the instance of Deva Śarmā, younger brother of Govinda, a Kerala prince, probably of the principality of Cempakaśśeri (modern Ampalappuzha). The work deals with politics, royal conduct and war, on the background of natural and horary astrology. It is divided into eight chapters, called *viveka-s*, devoted, respectively, to *Naya*, *Yatrā*, *Jayajaya*, *Kāla*, *Śulacakrādi*, *Pañcasvara*, *Mṛgavīrya* and *Bhūbala*. The author writes very readable poetry and reveals a liberal and progressive bent of mind.⁴
