The personal name of this author seems to be Śaṅkaran Kaṇiyār. He belonged to the house of Kaṇiyāṅkaṇṭi in Eṭakkāṭ in North Malabar and studied astrology under Panakkāṭṭu Nampūtiri. In later life, he came under the influence of a Yogi and spent his life in meditation. His Praśnarīti³ in 20 chapters is very popular among astrologers of the Kaṇiyār caste. In its first twelve chapters, it is a free metrical rendering in Malayalam of his teacher's Praśnamārga and deals, in the remaining eight chapters, with other allied and miscellaneous matters.⁴
