For the definition of an Upádhi, *vide* Śríharsha and Udayana: **अव्याप्तसाधनो यः साध्यसमव्याप्तिः उच्यते स उपाधिरिति ।** Hence, to avoid an Upádhi (which is **साध्यसमव्याप्तिः**), the constant presence of anything relevant other than the sign and the signate in the positive instances (of agreement in presence, **अन्वय**), and the constant absence of any such thing in the negative instances (of agreement in absence, **व्यतिरेक**) must be safeguarded against. This amounts to Mill's Joint Method.
