*N. B.*—Udayana makes a similar reference to balloons filled with gas or smoke (धूमापूरितचर्म्मपुटकं) in discussing the opinion that air has weight (Kiraṇâvalî, वायुनिरूपणम्). These passages show that balloons were known in Udayana’s time (970 a.d.—*vide* उदयन, Lakṣaṇâvalî).
