There are passing references to the obscuration (अभिभव) of sounds in Vâtsyâyana, Udyotakara and Vâchaspati, but the subject is treated more from a psychological than from a physical point of view. (तीव्रभेरीशब्दः मन्दतन्त्रीशब्दमभिभवति न मन्दः। नानाभूतेषु शब्दसन्तानेषु सत्सु श्रोत्र-प्रत्यासत्तिभावेन कस्यचित् शब्दस्य तीव्रेण मन्दस्य अभिभवो युक्तः—Vâtsyâyana, II., 2, 14; *vide* Udyotakara and Vâchaspati, *loc. cit.* Here तीव्र = loud, and मन्द = low.)
