As regards sound in its physical aspect and the mode of its propagation, some of the Mîmâmsakas content themselves with saying that Vâyu (air) has a special quality (Nâda) which causes audible sound (नादो वायुगुणः वायुर्वा यदि कल्प्येत—Kumârila, Śloka-Vârtika; वायुरेव ताल्वादिस्थानसंयोगात् शब्दगुणको निष्पद्यते, शब्दस्यापि वायुगुणत्वं वेदितव्यम् — Pârtha-Sârathi Miśra, Nyâyaratnâkara).
