These two works summarise the astronomical knowledge of the Vedic Hindus upto, say the 2nd. century A.D., i.e. till the time of composition of the astronomical Siddhāntas. The characteristic features are the elaboration of a five-yearly luni-solar cycle comprising 1830 civil days, 1835 sidereal days, 1800 solar days, 62 synodic months, 5 solar revolutions and 67 lunar revolutions. According to the system taught in these two works, the year-length works out to 366 days and the synodic month to 29 1/6 days. The nakṣatra space is given as one-twentyseventh of the ecliptic.
